West Bengal Strengthens Nipah Response With Clinical & Surveillance Guidelines

The West Bengal government has released comprehensive guidelines for the treatment and management of suspected and confirmed Nipah virus infections amid the ongoing outbreak in the state. The protocols focus on rapid detection, immediate isolation and strict clinical management to minimise transmission and fatalities.

All individuals suspected of Nipah infection are required to be isolated without delay and treated in designated facilities equipped with robust infection prevention and control measures. Healthcare workers caring for these patients must follow standard, contact and droplet precautions and use appropriate personal protective equipment.

Supportive care remains the mainstay of clinical treatment, as no definitive antiviral therapy has been approved specifically for Nipah virus infection, though certain antivirals such as ribavirin may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis under expert guidance.

The guidelines also recommend active surveillance of contacts, strengthened environmental sanitation and biomedical waste management, and regular training of healthcare personnel on preparedness and response to Nipah virus.

District health authorities have been instructed to bolster surveillance, reporting and laboratory coordination to ensure timely confirmation of suspected cases.
