Uttarakhand CM Dhami Asks Centre To Approve Multi-Organ Transplant Unit In AIIMS Rishikesh

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has formally approached the Union government for approval to establish a Multi‑Organ Transplant Unit at AIIMS Rishikesh. The proposed unit aims to enable the institute to perform complex organ transplants locally, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the state for critical procedures.

In recent years, demand for advanced medical services at AIIMS Rishikesh has surged, particularly in organ donation and multi-organ transplantation, with an increasing number of critical patients arriving from Uttarakhand and neighbouring states. Growing awareness about organ donation has also contributed to a rise in potential donor cases. Despite this demand, patients currently face delays and financial burdens when traveling out of state for kidney, liver, pancreas, or heart transplants.

AIIMS Rishikesh already possesses the necessary specialists, infrastructure, and technical capabilities to support a dedicated multi-organ transplant unit. Establishing a full-fledged department would significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to manage complex cases, benefiting not only Uttarakhand but also the wider northern and Himalayan regions with timely and advanced medical care.

During the event, Chief Minister Dhami also distributed appointment letters to 142 newly selected assistant professors for government medical colleges, reinforcing the state’s healthcare workforce and medical education system. Officials from AIIMS Rishikesh and state health departments attended, highlighting the coordinated effort to expand advanced healthcare services.

If approved, the multi-organ transplant unit will position Uttarakhand as a regional hub for specialized medical care, modernizing the state’s healthcare infrastructure while improving patient outcomes and access to critical health services.
