The Government of India has launched the PRIP (Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma‑MedTech Sector), a ₹5,000 crore initiative aiming to transform India’s pharmaceutical and medical‑device sector from cost‑based manufacturing to innovation‑driven growth.

Under PRIP, seven Centres of Excellence (CoEs) have been established at the country’s seven National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) campuses — located at Mohali, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Kolkata, Raebareli, Hajipur and Hyderabad — to strengthen research infrastructure. Through these CoEs, the scheme is designed to support high‑quality research in priority areas such as new medicines, complex generics, biosimilars and novel medical devices.

In addition to infrastructure support, PRIP will provide financial assistance to industries, startups and med‑tech firms to carry out research, development and commercialisation of pharmaceutical products and medical technologies.

The scheme is expected to foster a robust pipeline of innovation by backing around 300 research and innovation projects across India. Beneficiary companies will be able to partner with academic and research institutions to leverage state‑of‑the‑art resources and share intellectual property, accelerating translation from lab to market.

With this move, the government aims to strengthen India’s global competitiveness in pharmaceuticals and medical technologies, create high‑skilled jobs, and reduce reliance on imports for critical drugs and medical devices — thereby supporting both public health priorities and the country’s long-term self‑reliance in the healthcare sector.
