Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned against the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, highlighting the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. Addressing the nation in his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio programme on Sunday, Modi urged people to take antibiotics only after consulting a doctor.
Citing a recent report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Prime Minister said antibiotics are becoming ineffective in treating common illnesses such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections (UTIs). He described the situation as a serious cause for concern.
According to the report, Modi noted that the misuse and overuse of antibiotics is a key reason behind rising resistance. He cautioned that antibiotics are not medicines that should be taken casually or without proper medical advice.
“Many people believe that a single pill can cure every problem, but this mindset is making diseases and infections stronger than antibiotics,” he said.
Urging citizens to avoid self-medication, Modi stressed that antibiotics should always be used under a doctor’s guidance. “Medicines need guidance, and antibiotics need doctors. Following this will go a long way in protecting your health,” he added.
