Union Minister Jitendra Singh, MoS (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, highlighted that India is now scientifically and economically equipped to tackle complex health challenges through genomics, biotechnology, and preventive healthcare, while emphasising that early detection and affordability remain the biggest hurdles in managing rare and genetic diseases.

During his visit to the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) in Hyderabad, Singh highlighted that the country has moved from primarily battling infectious diseases to a futuristic healthcare phase, where molecular diagnostics, genome sequencing, and personalised medicine are becoming central to healthcare delivery. He noted that institutions like CDFD play a critical role in translating laboratory research into real-world clinical outcomes.

He emphasised the rapid progress in genomics-led initiatives, including large-scale genome sequencing, paediatric genetic disease programmes, and pioneering work in conditions such as haemophilia. He pointed out that the National Policy for Rare Diseases, introduced in 2021, marked a major shift in India’s approach, reflecting foresight and commitment to ensuring affordable treatment for affected families.

He further highlighted the growth of India’s bio-economy, noting the surge in biotech startups and strengthened research-industry collaboration under the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC).

Jitendra Singh also reviewed ongoing research at CDFD, including genome sequencing programmes and public outreach efforts, and laid the foundation stone for the National Skill Development Centre, SAMARTH, reinforcing the country’s drive toward innovation-led, personalised healthcare.
