Andhra Pradesh has emerged as one of India’s top-performing states in HIV control, registering a significant decline in new infections and positivity rates over the past decade, according to new data reported by state health authorities.
The state has achieved a significant reduction in HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths, announced by Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav on Sunday. As per the latest figures, the state has achieved an 88% reduction in HIV positivity over 13 years. The positivity rate, which stood at 4.13% in 2010-11, has dropped to 0.49% in 2023-24, marking one of the steepest declines recorded by any state.
The downward trend continued into the current financial year, with the positivity rate reported at 0.58% in 2024-25, reflecting sustained improvements in prevention, testing and treatment services.
Health department data also shows a consistent reduction in the number of new HIV cases detected annually. Andhra Pradesh, which previously recorded one of the highest burdens, now reports a significantly lower incidence, placing it among the leading states in effective HIV management.
Officials attribute the progress to expanded testing coverage, targeted interventions, improved access to antiretroviral therapy, and strengthened surveillance across key districts.
The state has also reported declining trends in AIDS-related deaths, supported by improved treatment adherence and early detection efforts.
The sustained fall in positivity rates and new infections positions Andhra Pradesh as a model for other states working to curb HIV transmission and strengthen public health response systems.
