GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has entered into a voluntary agreement with the U.S. government to lower the cost of prescription medicines for American patients and expand access to treatments for more than 40 million Americans living with respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The agreement covers GSK’s broad respiratory portfolio and delivers on all four actions requested by President Trump in his July 31st letter. Under the deal, GSK will reduce the price of selected medicines in Medicaid and adopt a more balanced pricing approach for new product launches that recognises the value of innovation across developed nations.

The company will also make most of its inhaled respiratory portfolio and other products available via a direct-to-patient purchasing platform, offering savings of up to 66 per cent.

As part of the President’s Strategic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Reserve (SAPIR), GSK will secure a reserve of albuterol (salbutamol), the active ingredient used in many inhalers, to enhance the resilience of the U.S. supply chain for critical respiratory medicines.

The agreements cover both GSK and ViiV Healthcare, providing clarity on the future U.S. pricing framework and temporarily excluding the companies from s232 tariffs for three years. The detailed terms of the agreements remain confidential.

The move builds on GSK’s decades-long commitment to making medicines accessible and affordable worldwide while supporting supply chain security for essential treatments.
