Mumbai, India : Medtronic announced the launch of its Avalus™ Ultra bioprosthesis heart valve in India — a next-generation surgical aortic valve designed to simplify implantation, enhance long-term reliability, and support lifetime patient management.
Developed to optimize surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) procedures, the Avalus Ultra offers surgeons improved ease of use and precision during implant. The valve provides a durable circular foundation and reliable performance that facilitates future transcatheter aortic valve-in-surgical aortic valve (TAV-in-SAV) reinterventions, ensuring long-term treatment flexibility for patients with aortic valve disease.
Key design enhancements include a low-profile structure and a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) base frame, ensuring consistent circularity and durability. The valve also features an industry-leading effective orifice area (EOA) that may enable greater blood flow, a radiopaque coil for clear visibility during future valve-in-valve procedures, and a flexible sewing cuff for secure seating with minimal paravalvular leak (PVL) rates. The inclusion of replica sizers with simulated cuffs further supports accurate and efficient sizing during surgery.
Building upon over a decade of clinical experience with the original Avalus valve (first launched in 2017), the Avalus Ultra incorporates long-term durability data and design refinements validated through global clinical use. The valve received U.S. FDA clearance in January 2025 for the treatment of aortic stenosis, followed by launches in the U.S. (April 2024) and Europe (October 2024) before its introduction in India.
