Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday inaugurated the Medanta New 550-Bed Hospital located in Sector 50, Noida. During the event, he highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to expand access to free healthcare, particularly through government health insurance schemes.
The Uttar Pradesh government has increased the reach of initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), which aim to make medical treatment more accessible for economically weaker families. These schemes provide an annual health coverage of ₹5 lakh per family for secondary and tertiary hospital care, benefiting around 50 crore people across India.
Ayushman Bharat, launched in line with the National Health Policy 2017, seeks to advance the country’s progress toward Universal Health Coverage.
The PM-JAY component of the scheme, launched on September 23, 2018, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, is currently the world’s largest health insurance program.
Beneficiaries are selected based on deprivation and occupational criteria outlined in the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 for both rural and urban areas. The scheme is fully funded by the Government of India, with implementation costs shared between the Centre and the States.
The inauguration of Medanta Hospital in Noida marks another step in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh.
