The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GE HealthCare Technologies to launch a Cancer Research and Innovation Centre in India. This collaborative initiative aims to transform cancer care through advanced technology, clinical research, and academic partnerships.

Under this agreement, TMC will lead as the clinical oncology partner, while GE HealthCare will contribute as the technology partner. A Joint Working Group will be formed to outline priority project areas and chart a five-year roadmap to guide the collaboration.

India is witnessing a steady rise in cancer cases. According to the National Cancer Registry Programme, the cancer burden is expected to grow by 12.8% in 2025 compared to 2020. In 2023, India recorded over 14 lakh cancer cases, with nearly 100 new cases reported per lakh population annually.

Dr. CS Pramesh, Director of Tata Memorial Hospital, highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts, including expanding cancer care centres, day care facilities, and awareness initiatives. However, challenges such as early detection, access to quality care, and preventive strategies remain significant.

Chaitanya Sarawate, President and CEO of GE HealthCare South Asia, emphasized the role of technology in enhancing cancer outcomes. He noted that GE HealthCare is focused on precision-led oncology care, leveraging AI-driven devices, imaging tools, and digital platforms to personalize treatment.

The collaboration will focus on developing and testing innovative technologies—such as AI tools for imaging and workflow optimization, advanced image analysis hardware/software, and integrated digital health platforms. These innovations aim to enhance early diagnosis and improve personalized treatment strategies.

The centre will also support clinical research using well-annotated patient data and contribute to building enterprise-level applications to optimize the overall delivery and management of cancer care across India.
