Rare Duplex Kidney Anomaly Treated With Advanced Endourology At Yatharth Hospital

Doctors at Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida have successfully managed a rare congenital urological disorder in a patient with a duplex kidney system complicated by a ureterocele and obstructive ureteric stones, a condition that had resulted in severe swelling of the upper portion of the kidney.

The patient sought medical care after experiencing ongoing lower abdominal pain and painful urination that interfered with routine activities. Diagnostic evaluation, including imaging and laboratory tests, revealed a duplex collecting system — a congenital abnormality in which a single kidney drains through two ureters.

The anomaly was further complicated by a ureterocele and a stone lodged in the ureter, leading to obstruction and significant dilation of the upper renal segment, raising the risk of permanent kidney damage.

Following clinical stabilisation and multidisciplinary assessment, the urology team opted for a minimally invasive surgical approach to relieve the obstruction and preserve renal function. The patient underwent an advanced endourological procedure comprising cystoscopy, incision of the ureterocele, ureteroscopy, laser fragmentation of the stone, and placement of a Double-J stent. The procedure was performed under general anaesthesia and completed without intraoperative complications.

Post-surgery, the patient showed steady recovery and was managed with intravenous antibiotics, pain control, fluids, and standard supportive therapy. Renal function remained stable, and the patient was discharged after achieving clinical improvement. Discharge planning included medication guidance, dietary recommendations, and scheduled follow-up.

The case underscores the expanding role of minimally invasive endourology in addressing complex congenital urological conditions and highlights how timely intervention can prevent irreversible kidney damage while reducing surgical trauma and recovery time.
