Assam has strengthened its public healthcare infrastructure with the launch of a new 1.5 Tesla MRI centre at Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital. The facility was inaugurated by Ashok Singhal, Assam’s Minister for Health and Family Welfare, and is expected to significantly improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce referral pressure on other hospitals, and ensure timely and affordable care for patients across Upper Assam.

The MRI centre is equipped with advanced imaging technology comparable to leading facilities in the country. A key feature of the initiative is its operational model, under which the facility will be run and managed by the Assam Medical Services Corporation Limited (AMSCL).

Charges for diagnostic services will be levied strictly in line with government norms, aimed at providing relief to poor and vulnerable patients who earlier faced high private costs or long-distance travel for MRI scans.

The inauguration was attended by local legislators, senior officials from Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital, and representatives of the Department of Health and Family Welfare.

The initiative forms part of the state government’s broader push to expand access to state-of-the-art healthcare services and strengthen diagnostic capacity within the public health system.
