Morigaon Civil Hospital has received approval from the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) for the establishment of a Link Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) Centre, a strategic step aimed at strengthening HIV care and treatment services across the district.
The approval is part of ongoing efforts by the Government of India to expand access to HIV treatment, improve patient outcomes, and enhance public health infrastructure in Assam.
The Link ART Centre will provide free, lifelong HIV treatment to people living with HIV, including regular health monitoring, counselling, and referral services. By bringing treatment closer to patients’ homes, the centre is expected to improve treatment adherence, ensure timely medical intervention, and reduce complications associated with HIV. This is particularly significant in rural and semi-urban areas of Morigaon district, where access to specialised HIV care has traditionally been limited.
The initiative will significantly enhance the district’s capacity to deliver comprehensive HIV care and support services, integrating prevention, treatment, and follow-up within a single facility. Patients who previously had to travel long distances for ART services will benefit from more accessible care, reducing both travel costs and the risk of treatment interruptions.
The Assam State AIDS Control Society is preparing to operationalise the centre by providing technical training to district-level healthcare staff, ensuring that healthcare workers are equipped to manage ART services efficiently. Once functional, the centre will also contribute to strengthening Assam’s overall HIV response mechanism by supporting early diagnosis, regular monitoring, and timely management of opportunistic infections.
The establishment of the Link ART Centre at Morigaon Civil Hospital aligns with national objectives to expand HIV care coverage, improve quality of life for people living with HIV, and achieve sustained treatment outcomes at the community level.
By increasing accessibility and offering patient-centered services, the facility is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing public health outcomes in Morigaon and surrounding regions.
