The Punjab government has marked a major breakthrough in the state’s tertiary healthcare landscape with the successful conduct of its first-ever liver transplant surgery at a government facility.
The procedure was carried out at the Punjab Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (PILBS) in Mohali, signalling a significant leap in the state’s capability to deliver advanced and high-risk surgical care within the public health system. The milestone comes under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, whose government has been pushing to strengthen specialised medical services across Punjab.
Health, Family Welfare, and Medical Education and Research Minister Dr. Balbir Singh presented the successfully operated patient before the media, underscoring the importance of the achievement. He noted that this marks the first time in Punjab’s medical history that such a delicate and complex liver transplant has been performed successfully in a state-run institute.
The accomplishment not only reflects rising clinical capacity within government hospitals but also represents a step towards making highly specialised treatment accessible to a wider section of the population.
The successful surgery positions PILBS as a key centre for advanced hepatobiliary care and reinforces the government’s ongoing efforts to expand high-end medical services within the public sector.
