Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the progress of the proposed Mizoram State Super-Speciality Cancer & Research Centre, a landmark healthcare initiative being developed with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under India’s External Aided Project (EAP) framework.

To be constructed at Zemabawk in Aizawl, the project is estimated to cost ₹700 crore, with ₹560 crore secured as a low-interest loan from JICA at 1.5% interest, with repayment scheduled to begin in 2033. The Loan Agreement between the Government of India and JICA was officially signed in February 2023.

The upcoming facility will feature cutting-edge infrastructure, including a modern cancer hospital, a dedicated nuclear medicine block, and residential quarters for staff.

The centre will also be equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies such as:

  • PET Scan / SPECT Scan

  • 1.5 Tesla MRI

  • 128-slice CT Scanner

  • PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System)

  • RT-PCR / Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS)

  • Additional high-end diagnostic systems

In addition to infrastructure, the project includes provisions for capacity building and the development of soft components, aimed at enhancing medical expertise and healthcare delivery.

During the review, discussions focused on ensuring a transparent and efficient selection process for contractors and implementing agencies. A follow-up meeting is expected to be held soon to finalise these procedural steps.

Key attendees at the meeting included TBC Lalvenchhunga, Adviser to the Chief Minister; H. Lalengmawia, Commissioner & Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department; and other senior officials from the health department.

Once operational, the cancer centre is expected to significantly boost Mizoram’s healthcare capacity, offering advanced cancer diagnosis, treatment, and research closer to home for patients across the Northeast.
