Responding to the rising burden of digestive disorders in India, Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani, has launched the Kauvery Institute of Digestive Sciences, a dedicated centre offering comprehensive, evidence-based care for gastrointestinal and liver diseases.

Digestive ailments are among the most prevalent yet under-recognised health concerns in the country. Nationwide surveys show that nearly 70 per cent of urban Indians experience recurring problems such as acidity, bloating, constipation and indigestion. Despite their widespread nature, many patients seek medical help only when symptoms become severe. Studies also indicate that more than 56 per cent of Indian households report multiple digestive complaints, highlighting the scale of gastrointestinal distress across age groups.

Experts attribute the growing incidence of digestive disorders to changing dietary patterns, increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, irregular eating habits, chronic stress, sedentary lifestyles and poor sleep quality. Doctors are also observing a worrying rise in digestive conditions among younger adults and adolescents, including functional bowel disorders and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

The Kauvery Institute of Digestive Sciences has been set up to address these challenges through a multidisciplinary approach. The centre brings together medical gastroenterology, advanced endoscopy, surgical gastroenterology and hepatology, supported by preventive care, nutritional counselling and structured patient education.
