The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has achieved a major milestone in advanced surgical care, with its Department of Surgical Disciplines performing more than 1,000 robotic surgeries within a span of 13 months. The development marks a significant step forward in the adoption of high-end medical technology in India’s public healthcare system.
The institute has emphasised increased use of robotic-assisted surgeries, which has led to notable improvements in patient outcomes. Post-operative pain has reduced by nearly 50 per cent compared to conventional open surgeries, while hospital stays have shortened by about 30 per cent, contributing to lower overall healthcare costs. Additionally, the minimally invasive nature of robotic procedures has resulted in a roughly 40 per cent reduction in surgical site infections.
AIIMS highlighted that robotic surgery enables surgeons to perform complex procedures with enhanced precision, control and accuracy, helping improve safety and clinical efficiency while keeping the institute aligned with global advances in surgical technology.
The programme has also strengthened medical education and capacity building at AIIMS. The installation of robotic surgical systems has created expanded hands-on training opportunities for resident doctors, allowing them to gain direct experience with advanced surgical techniques during their residency. The postgraduate training curriculum in robotic surgery at AIIMS is now comparable with those of leading international medical institutions.
This milestone highlights AIIMS Delhi's commitment to enhancing patient care, improving surgical outcomes, and training a future-ready surgical workforce through advanced technology.
