The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC-ITS) at Ahmedabad Civil Medical College has set a new national benchmark in public healthcare by completing 500 kidney transplants in a single year, establishing itself as the only public sector hospital in India to achieve this milestone in 2025.

This achievement reinforces IKDRC-ITS’s status as the country’s leading government-run kidney transplant centre and highlights its role in providing advanced medical care to economically disadvantaged patients.

The institute operates under the guidance of the Gujarat government’s Health Department and continues to integrate cutting-edge medical technology into its services, earning the top rank among public hospitals in India for kidney transplantation.

Official data indicates that IKDRC-ITS had completed around 400 transplants by November 2024. In 2025, the institute reached 400 transplants by October 7 and concluded the year with 500, marking an unprecedented record in the public healthcare sector. Of the 500 transplant recipients, 367 were men and 133 were women. The hospital served patients from across India, with 330 from Gujarat and 170 from other states benefiting from its facilities.

The 2025 transplant tally also reflects significant advancements in specialised and technology-driven procedures. Among the 500 transplants, 157 were cadaver transplants, 90 were swap transplants, 49 were paediatric transplants, and 43 were robotic kidney transplants.

These complex operations were performed through a combination of modern surgical techniques and the expertise of highly skilled medical teams, further establishing IKDRC-ITS as a centre of excellence in kidney transplantation.
