Jammu and Kashmir is stepping up efforts to increase the number of medical seats across Government Medical Colleges, dental, Ayurvedic, and Unani colleges under the Health & Medical Education Department, following a directive from Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo.

In a recent meeting, institutional heads were asked to fast‑track proposals for expanding MBBS, MD/MS, DNB and super‑specialty courses (DM/MCh) as soon as the national portal of National Medical Commission (NMC) reopens. Institutions that already had additional MBBS seats sanctioned were urged to apply immediately for further increases.

Proposals under review include substantial increments: around 284 new MD/MS seats, 35 DNB seats, and 36 DM/MCh seats have been planned for the 2026–27 session. Meanwhile, several colleges are preparing applications to add 50 MBBS seats each.

The administration has designated nodal officers in each institution to ensure compliance with regulatory norms and timely submission of applications.

This push reflects J&K’s broader effort to strengthen medical education capacity and improve access to specialised health care locally.
