On the occasion of the Republic Day, Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta update the public on how the Ayushman Bharat health insurance programme has progressed in the national capital.
She highlighted that around 6.5 lakh people in the city have signed up to participate. This figure reflects the number of individuals who have completed registration to access the health benefits offered under the programme so far.
Ayushman Bharat in Delhi is part of the broader Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), a national health initiative designed to expand affordable healthcare access to vulnerable and low‑income households by offering financial protection against large medical expenses.
In Delhi’s case, implementation followed a Memorandum of Understanding with the central government, making the city the 35th state/union territory to sign up. The scheme provides eligible families with coverage for a wide range of medical treatments, and in this implementation the Delhi government is also contributing a top‑up to raise the total coverage to ₹10 lakh per family per year.
Alongside this, the government has worked to expand the network of healthcare facilities linked to Ayushman Bharat across the capital by establishing hundreds of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs — clinics that serve as local access points for care under the scheme — and by strengthening hospital capacity and staffing.
CM Gupta framed these achievements as part of a wider 11‑month report on her administration’s work, indicating that healthcare reforms sit alongside other priorities such as transport electrification, infrastructure spending increases, and social welfare measures. In the healthcare context, she also referenced the setting up of more than 300 of these health centres specifically to deliver preventive and primary care under the Ayushman Bharat framework.
Taken together, these details show that Ayushman Bharat’s rollout in Delhi is advancing beyond planning into actual utilisation and infrastructure expansion, with registration figures growing and services being accessed on the ground.
