The Government has approved 10,023 additional medical seats in government institutions, comprising 5,023 MBBS seats and 5,000 postgraduate seats, under Phase-III of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme. The expansion will be rolled out between the 2025-26 and 2028-29 academic sessions.

According to media reports, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda informed Parliament that the move is aimed at strengthening the country’s medical education capacity and enhancing healthcare delivery nationwide. The maximum cost per seat has been raised to ₹1.5 crore to enable improvements in infrastructure, procurement of modern equipment, and upgradation of teaching facilities.

States and Union Territories will be required to submit detailed project reports, with priority given to rural and underserved regions. The plan also includes regulatory reforms such as revised faculty norms and expanded recognition of teaching hospitals, with the broader objective of widening access to quality medical education and augmenting India’s healthcare workforce.
