The National Health Authority (NHA) showcased its pioneering use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance transparency and integrity within India’s digital health ecosystem at a high-level workshop organized by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, as part of Vigilance Awareness Week 2025.
Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, IAS, CEO of the NHA, participated as a distinguished speaker in both sessions of the workshop, sharing key insights on the integration of AI across India’s digital health initiatives — notably the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).
Delivering a focused presentation on “Fraud Detection in Government Health Schemes using AI” under the broader theme “Transforming Public Service Delivery: Potential Applications of AI in Health Systems”, Dr. Barnwal highlighted how NHA is leveraging AI and Machine Learning (ML) to detect, prevent, and address fraudulent activities in real time.
He noted, “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are redefining the world’s largest public health assurance scheme—shifting the focus from reactive fraud detection to proactive integrity management. This evolution is fostering greater transparency, accountability, and equity throughout every citizen’s healthcare journey.”
NHA’s proactive deployment of AI-driven tools and advanced data analytics continues to play a crucial role in ensuring that public resources are used judiciously while beneficiaries receive their entitled healthcare services under AB PM-JAY.
The CVC workshop focused on the transformative potential of AI and other emerging technologies in advancing ethical governance and operational efficiency across public systems.
The event featured two thematic sessions — “AI and Emerging Technologies: Past, Present and Future” and “Leveraging AI for Operational Efficiency and Preventive Vigilance”. Discussions centered on the evolution and future prospects of AI and its application in strengthening transparency, efficiency, and preventive vigilance within governance frameworks.
The workshop brought together senior government officials, domain experts, and representatives from various ministries and organizations to deliberate on harnessing technology for improving governance, ensuring accountability, and reinforcing preventive vigilance across government systems.
