MGM Healthcare Unveils Mobile ECMO Ambulance Offering ICU-Grade Heart–Lung Support

By Team VOH

MGM Healthcare has inaugurated a new “Mobile ECMO Unit,” a fully equipped ambulance capable of providing ICU-level heart-and-lung support outside the hospital, aimed at stabilising patients suffering from severe cardiac or respiratory failure during transport or before hospital arrival.

The ambulance is outfitted with an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system — a life-support technology that circulates, oxygenates, and returns blood to the body when the heart or lungs are unable to perform these functions on their own. This makes it possible to deliver critical cardiopulmonary support even in emergency settings or remote locations, where access to a specialised ICU might be delayed.

A specialised team — including critical-care physicians, perfusionists, and ICU-trained nurses — will staff the mobile unit, enabling on-site stabilisation and initiation of advanced life-support measures during transport.

The initiative aims to reduce delays in delivering time-sensitive treatment in emergencies such as cardiogenic shock, severe pneumonia, respiratory collapse, or other conditions where conventional ventilation or CPR may no longer be sufficient. The availability of ECMO during transit could improve survival rates and outcomes for patients facing critical heart or lung failure.

The unveiling of this Mobile ECMO ambulance marks a significant step forward in pre-hospital emergency care, extending the reach of advanced critical-care services beyond traditional hospital settings and potentially transforming outcomes for patients in cardiac or respiratory emergencies.
