Fortis Hospital on Bannerghatta Road in Bengaluru has successfully treated a high-risk case of leukemia in a pregnant patient, marking a significant achievement in managing complex medical conditions during pregnancy. A 32-year-old woman from Kenya who was 15 weeks pregnant was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer that posed serious risks to both the mother and the unborn child.
The patient presented with symptoms including persistent fatigue, unexplained bleeding, and severe pain in her right leg, alongside complications related to pregnancy and extensive Deep Vein Thrombosis, placing her condition in the high-risk category and making her treatment especially challenging.
A multidisciplinary team of specialists at the hospital initiated internationally accepted induction therapy for APL while providing comprehensive supportive care. This included antibiotics to manage infection risk, anticoagulation to address blood clotting issues, and transfusions of blood and platelets as needed. The care team closely monitored the patient’s condition to manage potential complications arising from both the leukemia and her pregnancy.
In addition to the induction therapy, the coordinated efforts of hematology experts, vascular surgeons, cardiopulmonary specialists, and obstetric care providers ensured that complications were addressed around the clock. After nearly six weeks of intensive treatment and monitoring, the patient achieved complete remission.
She was discharged from the hospital in stable condition with a structured follow-up care plan in place to continue monitoring her health and pregnancy progress. The successful outcome highlights the hospital’s ability to manage rare and complex cases that require integrated care across multiple medical specialties.
