Dr R M Anjana Takes Over As Chair Of International Diabetes Foundation

By Team VOH

Dr R M Anjana has been appointed as the chair of the International Diabetes Federation Working Group on Physical Activity, positioning her as a global leader in efforts to combat physical inactivity, a key risk factor for diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

She holds leadership roles as Managing Director of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and President of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation in Chennai, bringing extensive experience in diabetes care, research, and public health initiatives.

The working group, under the global “ACTIVE” initiative, focuses on promoting physical activity through evidence-based community interventions, policies, and awareness campaigns. Its aim is to translate scientific knowledge into actionable programs that encourage active lifestyles and reduce the incidence of metabolic and cardiovascular conditions worldwide.

Dr Anjana’s appointment reflects a broader international recognition of the critical role that lifestyle interventions play in preventing diabetes and improving population health outcomes. The role will involve coordinating efforts among experts across countries, fostering collaborations, and guiding the development of guidelines and best practices to encourage physical activity at both community and policy levels.

The International Diabetes Federation’s decision to appoint Dr Anjana highlights the growing importance of integrating clinical research, public health strategies, and policy implementation to address the rising global burden of diabetes. Her leadership is expected to strengthen global initiatives aimed at promoting physical activity, improve knowledge dissemination, and influence public health planning and preventive strategies for non-communicable diseases.

This appointment underscores India’s increasing presence in global health leadership, particularly in diabetes management, and demonstrates the country’s contribution to international research, advocacy, and preventive healthcare frameworks.
