A 54-year-old woman from Haryana, suffering from final-stage heart failure, has received a new lease on life after a successful heart transplant at a hospital in Dwarka, Delhi. She had arrived at HCMCT Manipal Hospital in a critical condition: her heart’s ejection fraction was at just 15 percent, she had endured repeated hospitalisations, her entire body was swollen, and breathlessness made even walking or lying down unbearable.
Doctors at the hospital said that despite being supported for 10 days with an intra-aortic balloon pump and having undergone cardiac resynchronisation therapy, her condition continued to deteriorate. With other medical interventions exhausted, a transplant emerged as the only viable option. After a month-long wait, a compatible donor heart became available from a private hospital in Gurugram.
A “green corridor”, a rapid transit route to preserve the organ’s viability, was set up, and the heart was transported to Dwarka in time.
The transplant was performed by a team under Yugal Kishore Mishra, Chairman of the Manipal Institute of Cardiac Sciences and Chief Cardiovascular Surgeon. The surgery lasted three hours and twenty minutes. As soon as the new heart was implanted, it began functioning immediately.
Hospital authorities said the case underscores years of commitment and effort in building a comprehensive heart-failure and transplant programme at Manipal. Within fifteen days of surgery the patient had shown remarkable recovery. The success of this complex operation offers renewed hope for other patients grappling with advanced cardiac conditions.
