As we approach the Union Budget, it is imperative for the government to prioritize healthcare spending, which currently stands at less than 2% of GDP. For a nation of our size and population, this allocation is far from adequate. Increased investments in healthcare infrastructure, including the establishment of new hospitals and medical colleges, are essential to address the critical shortage of skilled manpower. With just 1.3 doctors per 1,000 people, bridging this gap requires an expansion of medical education and training programs, potentially through public-private partnerships.

Mental health, a persistently stigmatized and underfunded area, demands dedicated attention. Awareness campaigns and increased funding are vital to addressing issues like depression, which significantly impact productivity and social dynamics. Furthermore, fostering indigenous medical research and development is crucial. India's leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic showcased its potential, and incentives for private players alongside funding for public-sector initiatives could reduce our dependency on international resources.

Health insurance accessibility must also improve. Waiving GST on health insurance premiums, as suggested by Mr. Nitin Gadkari, could encourage broader adoption, benefitting citizens significantly. On the digital health front, initiatives under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and the integration of the Data Protection Bill into healthcare are encouraging. However, incentivizing private healthcare providers to adopt these digital tools will be essential for widespread implementation and effectiveness.

Finally, reducing the cost of life-saving drugs and addressing healthcare disparities between urban and rural areas must remain priorities. These measures are crucial to ensuring equitable healthcare for all. We remain optimistic that this budget will take meaningful steps toward creating a more robust, inclusive, and accessible healthcare ecosystem in India.
