Dr. Govind K. Makharia, Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology and Human Nutrition at AIIMS New Delhi, has made significant contributions to gastroenterology as a clinician, researcher, and leader. Serving as the Past President of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (2023–2024), Dr. Makharia has been a driving force in advancing the field nationally and internationally.

His numerous accolades include the Sifton Gold Medal, Young Investigator’s Award (Asia Pacific Congress of Gastroenterology), and Young Clinician’s Award (World Congress of Gastroenterology). Notably, he received the prestigious Alkem Om Prakash Memorial Award for his exceptional contributions to gastroenterology as a young scientist.

Dr. Makharia has played a pivotal role in formulating guidelines for conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). He has also coordinated the National Task Force on IBD, collecting and analyzing data from over 1,000 patients across India. As a member of international groups such as the Asia Pacific Colorectal Cancer Study Group, he has contributed to groundbreaking consensus statements on colorectal cancer and ulcerative colitis.

With over 116 publications in reputed journals, Dr. Makharia’s work continues to influence clinical practices and policy development, establishing him as a gastroenterologist leader.
