Genome Sequencing Centre to Be Established at AMTZ, Visakhapatnam

A new genome sequencing centre is set to be established at the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Visakhapatnam following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Bio Valley and 4baseCare along with Define Bio Pvt. Ltd. (Biobank). The proposed Centre of Excellence (CoE), named BioSphere, will focus on advancing genomics and next-generation sequencing (NGS) capabilities in India.

The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s genomic infrastructure by enabling early and precise diagnosis, informed clinical decision-making, and personalised treatment approaches. The centre is expected to generate large-scale genomic datasets that reflect India’s genetic diversity, while also integrating relevant global genomic data to ensure scientific interoperability and global standards.

The CoE-BioSphere will support the development of diagnostics, risk assessment models, and therapies tailored to Indian genomic variations. It also plans to foster collaboration between clinicians, academic institutions, industry stakeholders, and data-driven startups.

In addition to research and diagnostics, the facility will function as a training and incubation platform. A dedicated incubation centre within BioSphere will provide genomics-based startups with access to sequencing services, curated datasets, mentorship, and product development support.

Leaders involved in the initiative stated that the collaboration is expected to strengthen India’s innovation-led biotechnology ecosystem at AMTZ. By combining genomics expertise, translational research, and incubation support, the centre aims to accelerate precision medicine development and promote healthcare innovation from Andhra Pradesh.

At a broader level, the development of population-scale genomic data is anticipated to contribute to evidence-based public health policies, preventive healthcare strategies, and improved accessibility and affordability in medical services.
