The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a cashless medical treatment scheme for teachers, non-teaching staff and their dependent family members working under the Basic and Secondary Education Departments. The decision was cleared at a state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday.
The initiative was first announced by the Chief Minister on Teachers’ Day last year, and has now received formal cabinet approval. The scheme is expected to benefit around 15 lakh teachers and non-teaching employees associated with the state’s basic and secondary education system.
Under the approved framework, beneficiaries will be able to access cashless medical treatment at both government and empanelled private hospitals across the state. Teachers working in self-financed, recognised institutions will also be covered, subject to due verification.
The state government has estimated the total expenditure for the scheme at approximately ₹448 crore.
However, the government clarified that employees and their dependents who are already covered under any other central or state health insurance scheme — including the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana or the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Abhiyan — will not be eligible for benefits under this programme.
The move is aimed at easing healthcare-related financial burdens for education sector employees and expanding access to quality medical care.
