Tamil Nadu is preparing to launch a major women’s health programme focused on early detection and prevention of cancer across the state. Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian announced the ‘Women Wellness in Week’ (WWW) project, a ₹41-crore initiative that will begin within the next ten days. The programme aims to make breast and cervical cancer screening easily accessible by deploying dedicated mobile medical units in every district.

Each district will receive a specially designed vehicle equipped with diagnostic tools and staffed by trained healthcare workers. These units will conduct exclusive screening camps in local communities, ensuring that women—especially in rural and semi-urban areas—can undergo timely check-ups without needing to travel to hospitals. Subramanian highlighted that the goal is to promote equitable and accessible preventive care for all women.

The Minister also announced that Tamil Nadu will soon introduce a free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination drive for girls under 14 to reduce cervical cancer risk. The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation has already initiated vaccine procurement, with distribution planned through government schools and primary health centres.

During an event in Saidapet, Subramanian reaffirmed the state’s commitment to women’s welfare by distributing deposits and bonds under the Girl Child Protection Scheme. He added that dengue cases remain under control due to ongoing vector-control campaigns.

The WWW project reinforces Tamil Nadu’s long-term vision of strengthening women’s health through early intervention and community outreach.
