SC Calls for Continuous Air Quality Monitoring, Not Seasonal Hearings

The Supreme Court on Monday said that Delhi-NCR’s air pollution crisis cannot be treated as a “seasonal” issue, directing that the matter be listed twice every month for comprehensive short- and long-term solutions.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, urged against turning stubble burning into a political or ego-driven issue. Challenging the notion that stubble burning is the primary cause of pollution in the region, CJI Kant — who hails from a farmer’s family in Haryana’s Hisar — pointed out that despite stubble burning during the COVID-19 lockdown, the skies remained clear. “This suggests other factors are at play,” he observed.
