In a proactive step to tackle the growing threat of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a mobile cancer screening initiative scheduled from May 21 to May 24. The initiative will use a specially equipped cancer screening van, provided by the government, to conduct free on-site tests for oral, breast, and cervical cancers across various parts of the city.
The campaign is part of the National NCD Screening Programme, under which NMMC has been conducting regular health checks for citizens over the age of 30 at municipal hospitals and urban primary health centers. These screenings cover high blood pressure, diabetes, and various cancers, with patient data being registered on the national health portal. Suspected cancer cases are referred to the Public Hospital in Nerul for further evaluation.
On May 21, the van will be stationed at General Hospital, Sector 3, Airoli, under the leadership of Dr. Sachin Chitnis. Residents from nearby areas including Digha, Ilthanpada, Chinchpada, Katkaripada, Airoli, and Rabada are encouraged to attend.
On May 22, the screening van will move to NMMC School in Shramik Nagar, where Dr. Vandana Narayani will oversee the operations. Residents from Pawne, NOCIL Naka, Ghansoli, Ghansoli Sector 4, Koparkhairane Sectors 14 and 16, and Mahape are expected to participate.
On May 23, screenings will take place at the Urban Health Centre Ground in Juhugaon, managed by Dr. Vidya Verma. Citizens from Juhugaon, Vashi, Turbhe, Indiranagar, and Sanpada are invited.
The final day, May 24, will see the van stationed at the Public Hospital in Sector 15, Nerul, with Dr. Suresh Patil leading the initiative. Screening will be available for residents of Shiravane, Nerul Sectors 1 and 2, Karave, Sector 48, CBD, and Kukshet.
NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has urged all eligible residents above 30 to visit their nearest Urban Primary Health Centre for initial screenings and follow up with the mobile van if referred. The civic body aims to promote early detection and timely treatment to reduce the cancer burden in the Navi Mumbai region.
