In a remarkable recognition of its healthcare achievements, Meghalaya has been ranked the second-best state in India for its outstanding palliative care services under the National Programme for Palliative Care (NPPC).

The honour was conferred by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare during the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2025 celebrations held at the Bagchi-Karunashraya Palliative Care Centre in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Saturday.

The award acknowledges Meghalaya’s exemplary efforts and innovative practices in delivering compassionate, high-quality end-of-life care to patients across the state.

The State Health Department credited this achievement to its sustained focus on patient-centered care and collaborative community engagement.

“This achievement is a testament to the relentless teamwork of district health teams, healthcare professionals, and community health workers throughout Meghalaya. Their combined efforts have established the state as a national benchmark for effective and compassionate palliative care delivery,” officials stated.

This national recognition reinforces Meghalaya’s leadership in creating a humane and accessible palliative care ecosystem, setting a model for other states to emulate.
