In a major step towards cancer prevention, the Kerala Health Department has announced plans to introduce the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for Plus One and Plus Two students across the state. The initiative, aimed at preventing cervical cancer, was announced by Health Minister Veena George following a high-level review meeting.
The HPV vaccine is most effective when administered between the ages of 9 and 14, though it can be given up to age 26. A final decision on the rollout strategy will be taken soon, pending the recommendations of a technical committee meeting scheduled within the week. Minister George noted that the plan aligns with the Chief Minister’s vision of a cervical cancer-free Kerala.
Cervical cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women, and HPV vaccination is globally recognized as a critical preventive measure. To ensure successful implementation, the state will also launch a targeted awareness campaign focused on both students and parents. The campaign messaging will be developed in line with the technical committee’s guidance and rolled out at the school level.
The vaccination drive forms part of Kerala’s broader cancer prevention strategy. The state has already established a cancer care grid to streamline diagnosis and treatment services. Additionally, through the campaign ‘Arogyam Anandam Akattam Arbudam’, over 17 lakh people have been screened for various cancers so far.
With this initiative, the Health Department aims to boost awareness, drive participation, and take a significant step toward eliminating cervical cancer in the state.
