The Jammu & Kashmir administration is set to implement a comprehensive cancer control strategy supported by expanded medical infrastructure and strengthened healthcare services across the Union Territory.

Health and Education Minister Sakina Itoo, while replying to a discussion on grants in the Legislative Assembly, highlighted that the administration is significantly expanding hospital infrastructure, diagnostic services, and emergency healthcare facilities to improve access and outcomes for patients.

The strategy, developed in collaboration with national agencies including NITI Aayog and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), aims to enhance cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment services. Several major hospital projects are underway, including new bed blocks and expanded medical units at Government Medical College campuses in Jammu and Srinagar, alongside upgrades to diagnostic and emergency care facilities.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the plan incorporates preventive measures such as a cervical cancer vaccination drive targeting girls aged 9–15 years. Emergency response capabilities are being strengthened with new advanced life support ambulances and enhanced referral networks to improve critical care outcomes.

The multi-faceted approach — combining enhanced healthcare infrastructure with preventive and early detection measures — is crucial given the rising cancer burden in the region.

The initiative is expected to guide future public health policy, research partnerships, and system-wide improvements to reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality in Jammu & Kashmir.

This effort reflects the Union Territory government’s broader focus on strengthening the health ecosystem, enhancing non-communicable disease screening, and expanding high-end treatment capabilities to ensure accessible, quality healthcare for all residents.
