Road, Transport, and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon launch a cashless medical treatment scheme for road accident victims. Mr. Gadkari made the announcement while addressing a press conference after chairing the 43rd meeting of Transport Ministers from all states and Union Territories, convened by the Transport Development Council in New Delhi.
Under the scheme, victims of road accidents will be entitled to cashless treatment worth up to ₹1.5 lakh for a minimum of seven days. Good Samaritans who assist accident victims in reaching hospitals will be recognised and rewarded ₹25,000 under the programme. Those assisting will be designated as Rahveers.
The pilot project has already been implemented in states including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, with successful outcomes reported. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader push to enhance emergency healthcare access and encourage public participation in road safety.
