Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that plans are already underway to expand robotic surgical facilities to all government medical colleges in the state by 2026, signalling a major push to upgrade advanced healthcare within the public system.
He emphasised that the rollout of robotic surgery has already begun, with facilities operationalised at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities (AIMSS), Chamiana, and Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, marking the first introduction of robotic surgery in Himachal Pradesh’s public health sector.
The government’s push for robotic surgery is part of a larger strategy to make Himachal Pradesh a hub for medical excellence, supported by significant investments in healthcare infrastructure. A budget has been approved for AI-equipped smart laboratories at key institutions, and dedicated infrastructure for specialised care such as bone marrow transplant units is also being developed. These moves aim to reduce the need for residents to seek treatment outside the state and enhance access to high-end medical technology.
The government is also working on strengthening supporting infrastructure, specialist training and diagnostic services to ensure the sustainability of advanced surgical care across all medical colleges as the programme scales up. The initiative reflects a wider national trend of integrating high-end medical technologies into public healthcare systems to enhance quality and accessibility of care.
