Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Tuesday inaugurated the Government Hospital and Research Centre at Tuem (GMC Link), marking a significant expansion of public healthcare infrastructure in Pedne and North Goa.
The inauguration took place in the presence of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, MLAs Jit Arolkar and Pravin Arlekar, former Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, along with Zilla Parishad members, sarpanch representatives, doctors and senior government officials.
The new facility is positioned as a key milestone in Goa’s healthcare development under the Double Engine Sarkarframework. Over recent years, the state has strengthened its health ecosystem through initiatives such as the establishment of the All India Institute of Ayurveda, the Super Specialty Block at Goa Medical College (GMC), and a steady increase in medical education seats. The Tuem centre adds to this trajectory by extending advanced healthcare services to the northern regions of the state.
Operation Theatre services at the hospital are expected to begin within the next six months. The state government has also emphasised the need for greater participation of young Goan doctors in public healthcare delivery, particularly in rural and underserved areas, with doctor onboarding to be supported through bond service mechanisms.
In addition to clinical services, a Government of India–supported research unit is being established at the Tuem centre, aimed at strengthening its academic and research capabilities alongside patient care.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the contributions of Dr Humraskar and the medical workforce, including doctors, nurses and hospital staff, for their continuous service and commitment to strengthening Goa’s public healthcare system.
