Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced on Sunday that the state is preparing to launch a Universal Health Coverage Scheme offering ₹2.5 lakh health insurance to every resident. Speaking at the inauguration of the new Shankara Eye Hospital building in Pedakakani, Guntur district, he added that the government is also working to provide medical support of up to ₹25 lakh for economically weaker sections.
Naidu interacted with hospital authorities, who highlighted the institution’s advanced facilities. The Shankara Eye Hospital has so far conducted more than four lakh surgeries and nine lakh eye examinations, supported by a team of 300 professionals and handling nearly 3,000 patients daily. He noted that under the upcoming Sanjeevani Project, the government intends to deliver quality healthcare services to people across the state, regardless of location.
The Chief Minister also revealed plans to digitise the medical records of over six crore residents. A pilot project, supported by the Bill Gates Foundation, is already underway to facilitate knowledge and technology transfer. The newly inaugurated facility, functioning under the guidance of Shankaracharya Sri Sri Sri Shankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamiji of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, includes a state-of-the-art Super Specialty Eye Care Centre.
