Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday reiterated that while the proposed medical colleges in the state will be developed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, their administration and jurisdiction will remain with the government.
The decision to adopt the PPP model for establishing 10 government medical colleges has generated significant debate across the state. During a review meeting with the Health Department, the Chief Minister sought updates on the first phase of colleges being developed at Adoni, Markapuram, Madanapalle and Pulivendula. Officials briefed him that four stages of the tendering process have been completed and the entire exercise is expected to conclude by the end of December.
The state government believes the PPP model will help expand access to advanced healthcare services in rural areas, which are currently limited to urban centres. According to Naidu, the initiative is expected to benefit students, local communities and the broader public by improving the availability of medical education and health services.
The Chief Minister noted that each medical college has been allotted 50 acres, with plans to construct the hospital and college buildings on half the land and develop nursing, paramedical, dental and other allied facilities on the remaining portion. The government is also setting aside 70 per cent of hospital beds for free treatment for economically weaker sections, while ensuring that all services meet government standards.
