Mizoram’s Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Pi Lalrinpuii, inaugurated the 12th Mizoram State Anti-Tobacco Day 2025 and launched the Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign (TFYC) 3.0 at the Directorate of Health & Medical Education Auditorium, MINECO. The event was held under the theme “A life without tobacco and its influence.”

In her inaugural address, Minister Pi Lalrinpuii emphasized that the main objective of TFYC is to create more tobacco-free spaces across Mizoram—especially in schools and public places—and to build a healthier generation. Citing departmental studies, she noted that a large number of tobacco users in Mizoram begin their habits at a young age, particularly among middle school students, and that even some healthcare workers continue to use tobacco products.

She highlighted that tobacco use not only affects mental and physical health, but also impacts financial stability, family wellbeing, and overall quality of life. The Minister urged participants and partner organizations to continue their commitment toward building a tobacco-free society through consistent awareness and community initiatives.

The launch event was chaired by Pi Lalnunmawii Ralte, Joint Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department, who also expressed gratitude to all collaborating departments and organizations.

Dr. Zoramthangi, State Nodal Officer of the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) under the National Health Mission, delivered a keynote presentation on the campaign theme. Pi Angela Zothanpuii, Director of School Education, spoke on “Education for a Tobacco-Free Generation,” while Pu K. Lalrohlua, Director of Rural Development, addressed “Building Tobacco-Free Communities.”

The program concluded with a pledge ceremony led by Pi Lalbiaksangi, Treasurer of the Indian Society on Tobacco and Health (Mizoram Chapter), where participants reaffirmed their commitment to the TFYC goals. Dr. Lili Chhakchhuak, Mission Director of the National Health Mission, Mizoram, delivered the vote of thanks, closing the event.

The Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign 3.0 aims to intensify youth engagement, strengthen anti-tobacco education in schools, and reduce tobacco initiation among adolescents, in line with Mizoram’s ongoing efforts to curb tobacco-related diseases and promote healthier lifestyles.
