Novo Nordisk India has joined hands with Emcure Pharmaceuticals to commercialize Poviztra, a second brand of its blockbuster weight-loss therapy Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg). The partnership is aimed at broadening market access across India just five months after Wegovy’s initial launch.
Under the agreement, Emcure becomes the first Indian company with exclusive rights to distribute and market the once-weekly semaglutide injection under the Poviztra brand. The collaboration is expected to accelerate penetration beyond major metros and premium obesity-management clinics, reaching a wider and more diverse patient base.
Obesity continues to be a major public health concern in India, with over 600 million adults estimated to live with generalized or abdominal obesity. Semaglutide has demonstrated significant clinical benefits, with nearly one-third of patients achieving more than 20 percent weight loss in global trials. Beyond weight management, the drug also reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events in individuals with obesity and established heart disease.
Emcure, ranked 13th in domestic pharma sales and operating in more than 70 countries, brings strong distribution capabilities across Indian geographies. Its involvement is expected to support smoother supply, deeper last-mile reach, and greater treatment accessibility.
This collaboration mirrors a growing trend of global pharmaceutical innovators partnering with Indian companies to navigate complex distribution ecosystems and regulatory structures. For Novo Nordisk, active in India since 1994, the agreement strengthens its long-term strategy to expand access to advanced chronic disease therapies across the country.
