India is poised for a major leap in its pharmaceutical and biotech ambitions, with exports expected to cross USD 30 billion by the end of 2025, up from the current USD 27.8 billion, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced. He also highlighted that the domestic pharmaceutical market, valued at about USD 60 billion, is projected to more than double and touch USD 130 billion by 2030.

Strengthening this growth trajectory, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, facilitated through DBT’s Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) and the Uttar Pradesh Promote Pharma Council (UPPPC). Dr. Singh emphasized that this centre–state collaboration will act as a catalyst for innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment across pharma, biotech, and MedTech sectors, while also fostering skill development, industry–SME partnerships, and faster commercialization of technologies.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary, DBT and Chairman, BIRAC, said the agreement will help unlock innovation pipelines and scale up affordable technologies.

India already hosts around 800 medical device manufacturers, with the MedTech sector expanding at 15–20% annually, while the biotech startup ecosystem has surged from roughly 50 in 2014 to over 11,000 today. With the country producing more than 60% of the world’s vaccines and exporting to over 200 nations, India’s bioeconomy is currently valued at USD 165 billion.

The initiative also aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s ambition to emerge as a hub for biotechnology and pharma, leveraging projects such as the Biotech Park in Lucknow, the Medical Device Park in Greater Noida, and the Bulk Drug & Pharma Park in Lalitpur. Officials expressed confidence that this partnership will accelerate India’s rise as a global centre for affordable, home-grown healthcare solutions and reinforce its “Made in India, Made for the World” vision.
