The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali, formally inaugurated its newly established Department of Medical Devices at G‑Block on 21st February 2026.

The event was graced by Dr. Vinod Kumar Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, Government of India, who officially opened the department and later toured the facility alongside Prof. Dulal Panda, Director, NIPER Mohali, Prof. KB Tikoo, Dean, and other faculty members. Key faculty from the department, including Prof. Tarun Sharma, Dr. Ajay Kumar, and Dr. Dipankar Das, accompanied the dignitaries.

The department has been established to advance research and innovation in medical devices, with an emphasis on early diagnosis, improved healthcare outcomes, and strengthening India’s healthcare ecosystem. It is positioned to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and foster technology-driven healthcare solutions.

Research priorities include drug delivery devices such as insulin pumps and transdermal patches, point-of-care diagnostics, regenerative medicine, assistive technologies including cochlear implants, and biomedical device-enabled software systems. In vitro diagnostics (IVDs) will focus on accessible, community-level primary healthcare applications.

The department will address both communicable and non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, obesity, diabetes, neurological disorders, kidney and liver diseases. Special attention will be given to early diagnosis of chronic kidney and liver failure, cervical and blood cancers, and anaemia in women, using reliable and affordable diagnostic tools. Integration of AI and machine learning will support accurate, sensitive, and specific diagnostics through multidisciplinary collaboration.

The department provides a platform for students to engage in research and innovation, beginning with foundational facilities and planning phased expansion based on feedback from faculty and students.

The initiative reflects NIPER Mohali’s efforts to strengthen India’s medical device research ecosystem and build future expertise in this sector.
