Medtronic, a global leader in healthcare technology, has announced the launch of its EndoFlip™️ 300 impedance planimetry system in India — a breakthrough innovation that enables real-time measurement of the esophagus, pylorus, and anal sphincter during endoscopic evaluation of esophageal motility disorders (EMDs).
Esophageal motility disorders affect the normal swallowing mechanism (peristalsis), often leading to symptoms such as dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), chest pain, regurgitation, and heartburn. These symptoms frequently overlap with GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and other gastrointestinal disorders, resulting in misdiagnosis or delayed detection.
The EndoFlip™️ 300 system offers a minimally invasive solution that measures dynamic changes in the esophagus as it propels food and liquid toward the stomach. Using a specialized EndoFlip™️ balloon catheter, physicians can assess esophageal health and visualize diameter measurements in real time. The system evaluates up to 16 measurement points within the balloon and simultaneously displays balloon pressure, providing precise data for diagnosis and treatment planning — often during the very first endoscopy.
By combining measurements of diameter and pressure, the system calculates the cross-sectional area and distensibility of GI tissues, offering valuable insights into tissue compliance in the esophagus, pylorus, and anal sphincter. These real-time assessments are particularly useful for diagnostic evaluations and pre- or post-treatment monitoring. Clinicians can also use the data to guide interventions such as endoscopic dilation and to evaluate therapeutic outcomes more accurately.
Notably, EndoFlip™️ 300 is the only available technology that allows surgeons to objectively assess the tightness of a fundoplication or the adequacy of a myotomy intraoperatively, potentially improving procedural outcomes and reducing complications.
“Medtronic is dedicated to revolutionizing esophageal care in India by equipping physicians with advanced solutions to enhance clinical outcomes. Our newly launched EndoFlip™️ 300 system empowers medical gastroenterologists and GI surgeons with objective data to expedite diagnosis and inform clinical decision making for patients with esophageal motility disorders. As a global leader in healthcare technology, our mission remains to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life through continuous innovation,”
said Abhishek Bhargava, Senior Director, Medical Surgical, Medtronic India.
With this launch, Medtronic continues to strengthen its commitment to advancing GI diagnostics and surgical care, helping clinicians achieve faster, more accurate diagnoses and improving quality of life for patients with esophageal motility disorders.
