Johnson & Johnson MedTech  has announced the U.S. launch of its latest innovation, the SoundStar Crystal ultrasound catheter, designed for intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) imaging in cardiac ablation procedures. The company highlights that SoundStar Crystal delivers superior 2D ICE imaging quality, providing clearer and more detailed visualization than previous-generation catheters.

The SoundStar Crystal catheter seamlessly integrates with the Carto 3 mapping system, enabling enhanced mapping capabilities supported by artificial intelligence (AI). Through this integration, the catheter supports efficient and streamlined workflows for electrophysiologists. A key feature includes CartoSound FAM, which automatically generates a 3D model of the left atrial anatomy. This is achieved through a novel AI algorithm that processes images captured during the rotation of the ultrasound catheter in the right atrium, helping simplify complex procedures.

At the core of the catheter’s capabilities is its 88-element phased linear array, which provides high-resolution images and improved tissue visualization. Its design also offers an optimal balance of stiffness and flexibility, promoting precision and maneuverability during procedures.

Intracardiac echocardiography plays a critical role in cardiac ablation, allowing real-time, high-resolution imaging of the heart. It enables physicians to monitor catheter-tissue contact and ablation progress, identify complications early, and assist in reconstructing cardiac anatomy. Moreover, ICE supports the implementation of zero-fluoroscopy workflows, minimizing radiation exposure for both patients and healthcare providers.

Jasmina Brooks, President of Electrophysiology at Johnson & Johnson MedTech, emphasized the significance of this launch: “We are proud to advance our legacy in integrated ultrasound technology with this innovation. The SoundStar Crystal catheter offers superior image quality, enhanced maneuverability, and stable performance. Combined with seamless Carto 3 system integration, it supports zero-fluoroscopy workflows and reinforces our commitment to advancing patient safety and delivering effective outcomes.”

With the launch of SoundStar Crystal, Johnson & Johnson MedTech continues to drive forward innovations that improve procedural efficiency, elevate clinical outcomes, and support safer, more advanced cardiac care.
