The Ophthalmology Department at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi Cantt has achieved a major milestone in Indian medicine by successfully performing the country’s first 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography with iStent, marking a significant advance in glaucoma care.
The procedure combines cutting-edge imaging technology with minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and was carried out using the newly introduced stand-mounted Spectralis system along with an advanced 3D operating microscope, positioning the Armed Forces Medical Services among global leaders in ophthalmic innovation.
Glaucoma remains one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide and is particularly challenging due to its slow, symptomless progression. The introduction of 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography enables real-time visualisation of aqueous outflow pathways during surgery, allowing surgeons to plan and execute highly precise, targeted interventions. This enhanced intraoperative insight is expected to translate into significantly improved surgical accuracy and better patient outcomes.
As a first-of-its-kind procedure in India, the integration of 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography with the iStent, a minimally invasive glaucoma surgery device, establishes a new benchmark in the management of glaucoma.
The innovation offers superior intraoperative imaging and holds the potential for improved long-term results for patients. For the Armed Forces community, the achievement represents both a medical breakthrough and a strategic advancement, strengthening vision care and supporting operational readiness through early and effective glaucoma management.
