World-renowned ophthalmologist Dr Harminder Singh Dua, Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Nottingham, UK, visited the Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, on August 2, 2025. Globally celebrated for his pioneering contributions to corneal science, including the discovery of Dua’s Layer, Dr Dua praised the hospital’s advanced infrastructure, modern equipment, immaculate environment, and disciplined yet compassionate work culture.
During his visit to the Department of Ophthalmology, Dr Dua remarked that the standards at Army Hospital (R&R) rival, and in some aspects exceed, top global centres. He delivered an engaging lecture, "Steering the Ship: From Studentship to Leadership", to senior faculty, postgraduate students, and healthcare professionals, offering insights into the journey from academic pursuit to visionary leadership.
Dr Dua also expressed admiration for the upcoming Advanced Centre for Ophthalmic Visual Sciences, Joint Replacement Centre, and Oncology Centre at AHRR — projects driven by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s vision and supported by Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi. He commended the Armed Forces Medical Services, led by DGMS Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, as a unique model of healthcare excellence built on service, innovation, and clinical skill.
Known for decades of clinical excellence, academic mentorship, and surgical innovation, Dr Dua’s work has reshaped modern ophthalmology and inspired countless medical professionals worldwide. He was felicitated during the visit by Lt Gen Shankar Narayan, Commandant of Army Hospital (R&R).
