Ramaiah Memorial Hospital has received accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy(FACT), marking a significant milestone in India’s hematopoietic stem cell transplantation landscape.
With this recognition, the hospital becomes one of only two centres in India to hold FACT accreditation and the only hospital in the country to have both FACT and Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditations. It is currently the sole FACT-accredited centre in Bengaluru.
FACT accreditation certifies compliance with globally recognised FACT–JACIE standards for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy. Unlike broader hospital accreditations that primarily assess infrastructure and staffing, FACT evaluates the entire transplant ecosystem — including donor safety, stem cell collection and processing, clinical protocols, long-term patient follow-up, outcome reporting, and continuous quality improvement systems.
The accreditation comes amid a rising burden of blood cancers and severe blood disorders in India. A new diagnosis is reported every five minutes, with more than 120,000 new cases and around 70,000 deaths annually, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer GLOBOCAN 2022 data. India also bears the world’s highest burden of thalassemia, for which bone marrow transplantation remains the only established curative treatment.
As transplant volumes increase nationwide, maintaining consistent quality standards and improving long-term outcomes have emerged as key public health priorities. In Bengaluru, a major referral hub for complex blood disorders, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital evaluates nearly 1,000 patients with blood-related conditions each year.
Of these, approximately 100 are clinically eligible for transplantation, but only 30 to 40 undergo the procedure annually due to donor availability, logistical constraints, and safety considerations.
The accreditation reflects the integration of governance, patient safety, and measurable clinical outcomes within its transplant programme, positioning the centre alongside global benchmarks in cellular therapy.
